The Yongnuo YN EF 50mm F / 1.8 lens is one of those secrets that China has well-kept. It is an investment with nice dividends. I invite you to lose the love of a couple of dollars and give this accessory a chance. Buy it here on eBay.

The Yongnuo brand is a perfect alternative to Canon. Its versatility, its price, and its definition are an indisputable couple for those who wish to master the art of photographic portraiture. Although, be aware: the lens is ideal for photography but not for video; it defocuses the background very well to give you that impressive bokeh effect that you see in many professional photos but it is slow in motion scenes. This is a good option if your budget is not enough to buy a Canon 50mm f1.8. But, compared to it, the Yongnuo lens autofocus is extremely high and much slower than the canon lens. The autofocus seems surprisingly accurate but you don´t have to take anything for granted. It also has manual focus, but is not full-time like in some Canon models. As if that were not enough, it is a relatively fast lens (f1.8) and adapts quite well in twilight situations, and works well enough for portrait photographs.

The images are sharp and if you like them, the bokeh effect is well achieved. This is, easily, my favorite lens for taking street shots. It’s lightweight, small and the 1.8 bokeh is there when I need it.

The truth, when I bought it, I expected a lens less defined or worked, but to my surprise, the images are clear and the bokeh is good. Again, I would not recommend this lens for those who seek to photograph their children or pets in movement or use it on events where fast movement prevails: like a wedding or a Quinceañera, for example. Bad idea. The autofocus is slow and, sometimes, imprecise, and makes a lot of noise. If you are a manual focus person, this lens is perfect for you, the image quality and the bokeh effect are very good, especially for portraits. I do not regret buying it and it is THE lens for most occasions: perfect for the price and ideal for beginners. In sum: this is a very light lens and a little noisy, but for the price on eBay, it’s worth it. Fantastic for manual focus portraits, not so good for autofocus subjects in fast motion.
